Title: 9.2.4

“This is my first attempt at writing a piece for a middle school jazz band, and I am honored to write this piece for my good friend, Jim, and his students at the Twenhofel Middle School Jazz Ensemble. The piece was originally meant to be a more lighthearted ballad; slow, sultry perhaps, but in good humor. However; in the process of writing the piece, 2 people very close to me, one a lifelong friend of the family, the other a musician, died suddenly. The bass clarinet figure is the foundation of the piece as my musician friend was a well-known bass player, the foundation of most all music. The melody is simple, not very dramatic, and very much understated as it evolved from my reflection on the close friend to the family. Her strength, gentleness and quiet demeanor permeates the melodic construct.”

-William Brian Hogg, 2018

9.2.4 features a duet for bass clarinet and baritone saxophone that is written. Chord changes are included if the instructor wishes to expand on the written duet and allow for either a longer solo section or for improvisation from the student. The section following the solos can be a little tricky, but all in all the tune is fairly accessible for most ensembles. Trumpet goes to a written G on the top of the staff. Alternate baritone sax (in place of the bass clarinet), clarinet, flute and treble clef baritone parts are included.

Title: SNAKES

Description: A high-energy adaptation to this great tune from Bob Bergs Short Stories album, Snakes is a terrific closer for your concert or set. The melody features a soprano and tenor duo in the spirit of the original recording. Solos are in the soprano, trumpet 2 and rhythm for the latin solo section followed by a tenor break and a burning up-tempo swing solo. The drummer gets space for an open solo and followed by a written duet battle written across the sections. There are plenty of hot licks in this one and should be an achievable challenge for your group, and frankly, a boatload of fun! Sop/T/B/2Trpt/1Bone/optl.G/P/B/D. Trumpet 1 range written D. Advanced.

Title: FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE CADILLAC CLUB

Description: A medium to up tempo shuffle adapted from the original recording, Friday Night at the Cadillac Club is a tenor feature with open solo opportunities for guitar and piano/organ. Guitar can be optional. The Duet/Soli section can be done with rhythm section accompaniment, but we decided to have the drummer play 2 and 4 and bring them in later at the bridge. You might recognize a quote from Bob Bergs solo in the sax soli. The tenor part makes this grade 4 a 5, and the trumpet 1 part goes to a written D. This arrangement is a crowd favorite and an all around great time! A/T/B/2 Trpt/Trom/G/P/B/D. Difficult.

Title: CAROL OF THE DRUM

Description: This arrangement is designed for the guitarist in your band that wants to ROCK! The chart does not look like much to the horn players at first, but trust me this one can be a blow and a great crowd pleaser for any holiday concert. When our band at NKU performed it, it was the 3rd of 5 standing ovations of the night and literally brought the house down. The guitarist is featured throughout and your drummer will need to eat their breakfast before playing this one!The piano melody was written in memoriam to a music student that took his life recently and the arrangement is built to remember and celebrate his life. 5/4/4/g/p/b/d. Trpt. 1 to written high C.

Title: WHAT CHILD IS THIS (GREENSLEEVES)

Description: A big intro reminiscent of Holst perhaps gives way to this fast waltz that features your soprano player. Optional trumpet/flugal solo changes are also included. After a key change, the saxes introduce an invention of sorts, brass are added, then the soprano takes the melody out into a vamp that rages with the rhythm section, giving way to an open drum solo, the intro figure returns and closes the door on this high energy treatment of Greensleeves. You could play this tune any time of the year and will definitely knock the audiences socks off!s/a/t/t/b/4 TPTS/4 BONES/g/p/b/d.Tpt. 1 to written high E.

Title: Four, Five, Six

This adaptation from the original Frank Foster big band score is now available for your Little Big Band. Instrumentation is A,T,B saxes, Tpt 1-2, Tbn, Guitar, Piano, Bass and Drums. Trumpet 1 has written Ds in the part, and the Trombone has a couple of Bbs but it isnt around for long. I have included an optional section for solos, as well as an optional section where the rhythm section drops out. (the way we performed it with my group) Changes are in all parts if you wish to feature other soloists. Its a great medium tempo F blues chart for your program, hovering (because of the range) around that 4-5 difficulty range. A nice sax soli and some countermelodies are also a part of the original brought forth in this adaptation. Order it up and dig in! Difficult.
